The focus of the Addictions Counsellor includes the development and implementation of individualized patient treatment plan with emphasis on counselling and guidance of the recovery process. The Addictions Counsellor is responsible for providing safe, effective care for individuals with mental illness and addictions and support linkages with community. They teach individuals how to modify their behavior with the intention of full recovery.
Knowledge of the recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes
Knowledge of local support groups and community resources
Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and core relevant legislation
Knowledge of mental health funding sources for community based workshops, pertinent government, social and labour legislation and programs
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local employers, service providers, stakeholders and families
In-depth knowledge of serious mental illnesses from a biopsychosocial perspective
Experience working with individuals with a serious mental illness
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively deal with clients
French language proficiency is considered an asset
Valid Ontario Driver’s License, means of transportation and ability to travel on a daily basis for outreach services - Required
Education and/or Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, Psychology – Required
Addictions certificate - Required
Previous experience with Addiction Services - Preferred
